PROS
1. Built-in family: When you rush and join a Greek house, you then become a member of not only the sorority/fraternity, but of the family as well.
2. Events: When you rush and become a part of Greek life, you get to take part in multiple different events, such as formals, volunteering, etc.
3. Nightlife: This is something that can be considered a pro or a con depending on your beliefs and opinions, but fraternities and sororities are widely known to always be having parties to attend, which, for some people, is what college is all about.
4. Living space: This is something that depends on the college, but some colleges will have a Greek row. This is where all of the fraternities and sororities’ houses are, which you could potentially live in if you were to rush.
5. Connections: By joining a fraternity or sorority, you are getting let into a world of connections with people all over the world who were a part of the same sorority/fraternity as you.
6. Opportunities: Being a part of a sorority/fraternity allows you to have lots of opportunities to step up into leadership roles, volunteer opportunities, and other things within your Greek house, giving you lots of experience that you can use later on in life.
CONS
1. Hazing: While some might consider this to be a pro, no one truly thinks that having to get hazed, is a positive experience. This can be pressure into something small to something absolutely outrageous.
2. Cost: Depending on the college, joining a fraternity or sorority can be very expensive and put even more financial stress and strain on you and your family.
3. Stereotypes: There are multiple different stereotypes that follow those who take part in Greek life. These stereotypes can sometimes push members to take part in things that they may not want to and create an unhealthy bias around friendships, power, and ideals.
4. Commitment: Joining a sorority or fraternity is a big commitment and is something that requires a lot of time, money, and involvement. You must be willing to give up quite a bit of your life to your Greek house in order to be a part of it.
5. Substances: Depending on what Greek house you join, the culture around substance use can lead to poor mental health among members. If substance use is a big part of Greek life at your college, then becoming a part of said Greek life could potentially lead to an unhealthy relationship with substances.
