As we all probably know, maintaining sustainability is of major importance to the world we live in today.
What is sustainability?
Sustainability, in this case, is the act of taking measures to preserve the environment in the community where we live.
But how are we doing, and how can we keep doing this?
Recently, Shoreline schools have been making many improvements to their environmental stability progress by incorporating more electric buses into the system early this year.
Shorewood is also equipped to one day add solar panels to the roof.
While many in the school and district are already doing what they can to support the environment, more students can take initiative so they can help out too.
How to get students involved
Some initiatives that could be used to motivate students could be a goal of recycling and cleanliness or a project with prizes.
Some options could be who can make the best building out of recycled cardboard or who can pick up the most garbage for a prize. Cardboard would probably be the best material because all materials that go to recycling are not always recycled.
Another benefit for cardboard’s use is that it is one of the easiest common recyclable materials to build with. Games and competitions are some of the best ways for students to get things done.
Know the basics
One of the most important parts of practicing sustainability is knowing when to recycle, trash, or compost an item when you are done with it.
This process makes recycling and reusing possible in the first place. Items should be recycled if they are plastic containers, paper, bottles, metal cans, or cardboard.
It is easy to recycle, so we just have to remember to do it for the great cause it supports.
Recycling shouldn’t be optional. We need to ensure that students at Shorewood are fully committed to doing it.
Other methods of being sustainable every day at school and in life include common things like unplugging devices when fully charged, turning off lights when not in use (which will also save you money), along with many other things that you can do to easily reduce energy consumption.
As long as we keep everyone on the path to sustainability, we can most certainly keep the better future that we are already working towards.
