See “The Nutcracker” at PNB

On the rare occasion you have nothing planned for this holiday season, the Pacific Northwest Ballet is showcasing its seasonal Nutcracker performance, and it’s worth a watch. The Nutcracker, based on the story written by E.T.A Hoffman and adapted by Alexandre Dumas, is about a little girl named Clara, who goes on a journey with the Nutcracker prince through the battle with the mouse king, the Magical Snow Forest, and the Kingdom of Sweets. PNB runs The Nutcracker for 35 consecutive shows between Nov. 25 and Dec. 27, with tickets starting at $27. The Nutcracker is a long-standing tradition for many families, and it’s never too late to make it one of your favorites this holiday season.

Snowflake Lane Christmas show

Missing the snow, and want more festive cheer this holiday season? Snowflake Lane is a free parade performing between Nov. 24 and Dec. 24, showcasing dancers, parade floats, and a live parade band. It’s a spectacle you wouldn’t want to miss. The first performance was showcased in 2001 with only 30 dancers, and now in 2023, has grown to almost 300 dancers. This show is a great holiday season activity to do with friends and family, and won’t break the bank.

The Gingerbread Village at Sheraton Grand Seattle

When you think of gingerbread houses, what do you picture? Is it those take-home kits you buy at the store? Whatever you picture, the idea that comes to mind is probably messy, time-consuming, and most likely not that pretty to look at. Well, when it comes to The Gingerbread Village at Sheraton Grand Seattle all those ideas go out the window. Run every year by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, this event will go from Nov. 21 to Jan. 1 and all proceeds will help fund research for type 1 diabetes. On display, you will find large, beautiful gingerbread houses made almost entirely out of candy built by architecture firms the organization partners with, along with a story about the kids who helped design them. Entry is free but they are asking for donations to help support their cause, and trust me, after seeing all the hard work they put in, you’ll definitely want to.

Anya Farwell, Editor
My name is Anya Farwell. I have worked on the Shorewood newspaper for 3 years, and am Co-Editor-in-Chief, as well as Arts & Culture Editor. I predominantly write for the paper, but I will occasionally take photos and draw. I love writing on the paper, and collaborating with my fellow classmates with the news of the school. Being able to brainstorm and layout the paper for every issue is exciting and gives me the opportunity to do new exciting things.

I'm Ursula, this is my third year on staff and second year as Co Editor-In-Chief. I typically just write, I love writing movie reviews for the Arts and Culture section, but I've also taken some photos and done some art for the paper as well. Though I'm sad that this is my last year with the Tempest, I'm excited to see how the paper turns out.
