What are the details of a music education major?

“A music education major is becoming either a band director or orchestrator, or choir director… you get to learn all of the instruments, how to conduct, how to choose and program a set.”

What are you planning to do with this major?

“I will be a band director for a couple years…and in the long term I want to teach private music lessons to students and children with intellectual disabilities.”

Who had the greatest influence on you becoming a teacher?

“It’s a combination of both Mr. Baker here at Shorewood, as well as the drum majors my freshman year.”

What’s your favorite instrument?

“My favorite instrument that I play is probably the baritone saxophone.”

How long have you been doing music?

“I’ve been playing the clarinet since fifth grade, and that was really the start of my music, but I did piano lessons for a little bit when I was younger.”

What do you hope to get out of your first year?

“I want to grow my musicianship skills, as I’ve felt like I’ve reached the max here at Shorewood, and I’m excited to have a larger music scene…and I’m excited to interact with so many other musicians that help me become better.”

Why did you choose this path?

“I’ve always had a big passion for music, and it’s something that I’ve grown up surrounded by, and I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, so it combines those two things.”
