Hi, my name is John Green, and this is Crash Course.” These are words most students have heard before, from the videos that would usually echo through the hallways. From after an exam, to before winter break, to just not wanting to teach us at the end of a long day, teachers put them on strategically, and quite effortlessly. But who would think that these videos would be the building blocks for many students to pass an AP test, ace a tricky Biology quiz, or just watch for educational fun (if you’re crazy).

From their YouTube channel Crash Course, John and Hank Green are the brotherly duo we were waiting for. Establishing their famous Youtube channel in 2012 they quickly gained a large following, many of them being students and teachers. Whether it was their witty banter or the astounding knowledge of history and science played out by little figures of great historians and cells, they became the essence of every highschool student’s dreams.

Although much of this piece is me praising the Greens for being educational gods, I think I am obligated to bring up the one thing that comes to everyone’s mind when watching their videos. How on earth do they talk that fast? Reciting knowledge at a fast pace is one thing, and yet the Green brothers both manage to take it to an entirely different level. Each video is packed with an insane amount of facts and trivia, to take notes, one has to slow down the video to a sloth-like pace to even begin to understand what they are saying or even teaching.

Although John Green got his “big break” on YouTube, many might also recognize his name from somewhere else. Green has written and published many popular books including “The Fault in Our Stars,” which was readapted onto the screen in 2014 and had us all crying at the end.

The Green brothers’ presence on the video platform has wavered over the years, although as they shied away from the lime-light of youtube, both established themselves on other social media platforms such as Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. TikTok increased immensely in popularity during the time of Covid, was a social media platform that influenced many… including Hank Green.

Videos circulated on the app, highlighting the occasional video of the Green brother showing an embarrassing moment during his time on Crash Course; sharing a joyous moment with one of his followers explaining his so-called “not so unusual” floating book shelves within his home breaking the internet and intriguing many book lovers. Posting funny, not-so-educational videos, both brothers became widely popular, sure to not leave any of their hilarious repartee behind.

Over the years the Green brothers have turned into an educational power duo, teaching history spanning from the dawn of time to World War II, and biology to organic chemistry; nothing could possibly top their educational greatness. Although we still get an often new video posted to Crash Course, we can only hope that both brothers return to teach us all one last lesson.
