Nancy Elder says farewell to Shorewood

‘I will really miss my daily contact with students and staff.’

by Nathan Serwold, Staff

How long have you worked at Shorewood?

I started at Shorewood the year before the new building opened. I think it was 11 years ago.

What did your job as vice principal entail?

I was the Administrative Registrar, in charge of Special Education, MLL (Multilingual Learning), Counseling, and Intervention programs. I built the class schedule, scheduled students into classes, and worked to ensure that students who needed various kinds of support got it.

Do you have any thoughts about David Tadlock as the school’s new vice principal?

I am excited that Mr. Tadlock has agreed to step in and serve as an assistant principal.  He had a choice and he chose Shorewood.

Have you worked with him before? What was that like?

Yes, he was the building principal at Syre when my son was there and later he was a colleague when I served as the Shoreline Principal’s Association Co-President. In both instances, Mr. Tadlock was always caring, thoughtful, and wise.

What is your new job, and what does it necessitate?

I am the Interim Director of Human Resources for Classified Staff. I am responsible for a number of things, including working with labor unions around contract issues, staffing departments and buildings, recruiting new staff, and supporting existing staff. Essentially, I spend a ton of time working with adults to ensure that students are getting what they deserve.

How do you feel about leaving the school?

Leaving Shorewood is bittersweet for me. I will really miss my daily contact with students and staff. I am also really excited about my new role.

What kind of changes do you think your leaving could bring to the school environment?

I’m not sure. It is my deepest wish that the school continues the work we started around inclusion and making sure that every student has access to the rich general education curriculum.

The freshmen this year never really got to know you. Do you have any words for them?

Take advantage of every opportunity you can. Challenge yourself academically and get involved in an activity that interests and excites you.

Do you have any last parting words?

Go Stormrays!
