Only about six percent of high school student-athletes ever get the chance to compete in collegiate sports. But the Shorewood athletic department is well above many across the country, having terrific and constantly competing teams across many sports. From both soccer teams to a state-winning wrestling team, an astonishing track and field team, and more, the Shorewood athletic department has done an amazing job in developing athletes to compete at the next level.
Track and Field
Track and Field, especially, is an area where Shorewood succeeds, with Shorewood constantly having many teams across the many competitions that compete in district, state, and regional tournaments. The Oregon relays, which take place every year at the University of Oregon, invite the best Track & Field teams from across the West Coast to compete. And many seniors did compete. Otto Erhart set his personal record and ran 1600m in 4:11.73, putting him 7th among 78 competitors. Hanna Bruno came 13th in the 800m and ran it in 2:13.03. And Ava Enriquez tied for 1st place in the Pole Vault, vaulting over 3.95 meters. A reminder that these athletes were competing among the best high school athletes on the entire West Coast. Erhart is going to Georgetown University, Bruno is going to John Hopkins Univeristy, and Enriquez is going to The University of Hawaii.
Boys and Girls Soccer
Both boys and girls soccer teams have also been strong throughout the last four seasons. With the boys just missing out on one State tournament appearance, and the girls reaching the tournament each of the past four years. Abbey Lee, the forward who starred on Shorewoods varsity soccer team for all four of her high school career, is heading off to Texas to play at Midwestern State University. Lee was Shorewood’s top scorer this past fall with 16 goals, but her favorite moment of Shorewood soccer came in her sophomore year. “I scored a last-minute goal in State, my sophomore year, to tie up the game 1-1. We ended up winning in Golden Goal 2-1 to go to State Quarterfinals.”
Girls Wrestling
Girls wrestling has two seniors off to college sports. Libby Norton will head off to Indian Hills Community College in Iowa, and Izzy Crave will attend Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake. “Shorewood wrestling has upped how many tournaments we go to in a year,” Crave says. “It’s given me a lot of experience. There are a lot of teams out there that only go to one or two tournaments.”
Boys Tennis
J.D. Drake is one of Shorewood’s latest tennis stars, heading to Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California. When asked what he’s most looking forward to in Santa Barbara, Drake said, “learning how to surf, but also the chance to play competitive tennis.”
Football
Shorewood’s most popular team, the football team, has been steadily improving over the past four years. Anthony Reyes, the lineman and guard who played football for all four years of his high school career, is heading to Pacific Northwest Christian College in Kennewick. When asked who helped his football career the most, Reyes responded, “Coach Petschl and my counselor because they have helped me throughout my 4 years of high school, and I am more than grateful for them being in my life.”
And for those younger classmen wanting to eventually take that step into college sports, many athletes gave some advice. “Persevere,” Abbey Lee states. “Don’t compare yourself to others, as everyone else’s recruiting is different.” Izzy Crave says, “Only you know what’s right for you, knowing ahead of time what you want in a school.” If one were to get the chance to play in college, Reyes says, “You have to be grateful for the opportunity, as not many athletes have the chance to go and play up in the next level.”
Whether an athlete gets the chance to compete in college, high school, or a backyard, just know that there’s at least someone out there who is proud. Playing and participating in sports is a privilege, and one cannot take that for granted. Shorewood Athletics knows just that, and has done a good job in allowing virtually anyone to compete at any level. And while we can celebrate everyone, we could maybe celebrate Shorewood’s class of 2025 sports commits just that bit more.
