Senior trips are an important part of learning independence. Whether you are going to another country or another state, or even staying in Washington, there are many things that help us learn to take care of ourselves, and navigate our world. Taking these endeavors helps us grow as people and expand the ways we think. Creating experiences before navigating adulthood helps us bond and relate with others. The more experiences we have, the more we can relate with others who have had similar experiences, even if it is just a small detail. These are some of the many reasons why senior trips are important.
Before heading off to college, Brogan Ballenger is spending his summer at his family’s cabin in Idaho, looking for a break from the city in a quiet, natural place. Ballenger sees the trip as a good chance to strengthen family ties before starting college. “Another chance to get close to family again before officially heading out,” he said, highlighting the importance of this time. He plans to hike and enjoy the peace and quiet for two weeks.
Minseo Kim is heading to South Korea and Japan before starting college. She’ll spend a month in South Korea with her family, reconnecting with relatives and exploring different places. “It’s definitely gonna be a really nice, relaxing period for me before I go off to college,” Kim says. In Japan, Kim is excited to visit Ghibli Park, as she grew up with Studio Ghibli’s films. She’s also looking forward to trying unique foods that are hard to find in the U.S. “Honestly, it’s mostly food,” she admits. The trip also includes visiting temples and shrines in Kyoto. Kim doesn’t travel internationally often, especially since COVID. This trip is a special opportunity to reconnect with her culture and enjoy a relaxing break before college.
Rose Do plans to take on her independence on her summer trip to Montana to visit friends. “The independence part will be good for me… No parents means a chance to be on my own a little,” Do said. Despite considering herself a homebody, Do is excited to push her boundaries. “Driving far and meeting new people are things I’ve dodged for a while,” she admitted, recognizing the need to step outside her comfort zone. This trip is a challenge she’s ready to embrace on her next steps towards becoming an adult.
These trips represent more than just vacations. They are significant milestones that offer a mix of relaxation, adventure, and personal growth. As seniors prepare for the next chapter of their lives, these new experiences and perspectives gained from their pre-college adventures will go into the next phase of their lives with open eyes and experiences to share.
