Sultan Gyro and Shawarma Grill is the place to go during lunch for most Shorewood students. Sultan Gyro is located on Aurora and right down the street from Shorewood.
As soon as customers enter, they are greeted by the smell of herbs. The restaurant sells many items such as Greek fries and gyros. A gyro is typically a combination of fillings such as tomatoes, lettuce, tzatziki sauce, and the option between chicken shawarma and lamb and beef, all packaged neatly in pita bread.
Sultan Gyro also sells their own version of Greek fries which is what attracts so many students, as does its proximity. But is Sultan Gyro a better alternative to other Greek restaurants? To figure it out, I decided to visit their place to see. The restaurant also sells many other items but those are their most popular.
When I arrived I ordered a lamb and beef gyro and Greek fries. The meat in the gyro was well-seasoned and juicy and had a melt-in-your-mouth texture matching its umami flavor profile. The seasoned juices of the meat were absorbed by the pita bread that wrapped the entire gyro adding a soft texture to an already perfect gyro. The tzatziki sauce made a smooth transition between the lamb and beef and fresh fruit and vegetables. The lettuce and tomato was fresh and absorbed the tanginess of the sauce. The onions added a sweet-mildness which blended into the sour tang of the tzatziki.

The fries were just as much of a delight as the gyro. The tanginess and sourness of the feta paired nicely with the sauce and the smooth texture of the cheese eased its way into its creaminess. The garlic spices that garnished the dish added a nice zest and left extra texture. The owners were generous with the portions when they made both of these dishes. I left the restaurant with a full belly and a happy heart.
That said, this wouldn’t be a restaurant review without talking about the location itself. Though the workers were sweet, it did take about 20 minutes for my food to get made despite us being the only customers. But because the food is house-made, it was more than worth it for the fresh ingredients and good taste.
Factoring in the convenience of this place being close to Shorewood, the incredible taste of their food, and the reasonable prices, I’d still give this restaurant 4/5 stars. I highly recommend it to any students who are craving Greek food during a lunch break and don’t want to drive.
