With the incoming winter season comes a rush of interest in winter sports, such as hockey, ice skating, snowboarding, skiing, and many more.
Looking to welcome in the winter season with some winter sports classics? Well, here is a watchlist for you.
“The Mighty Ducks”
“The Mighty Ducks” is a 90’s hockey classic. This movie portrays a feel-good story of a reluctant lawyer (Emilio Estevez) forced to coach a kids’ hockey team for community service. Part of what makes Estevez so reluctant is his previous experience on the ice as a kid with a tough coach, who this new team will have to play. The popularity of this film, and its second and third films, helped create a new team in the NHL called the Anaheim Ducks. This movie series is a heartwarming tale of teamwork and finding unlikely companions.
“Blades of Glory”
In the mood for a more comedy-centered film, look no further than “Blades of Glory.” Starring comedy titans such as Will Ferrell, John Heder, Amy Poehler, Will Arnett, and Jenna Fischer. Released in 2007, this movie is a funny story of two rival Olympic male skaters who share the gold medal, but they can’t keep up the niceties for long once their feuding becomes so much that their medals are stripped from them. The only way they can earn them back is by skating together, as a pair. A hilarious comedy/sports movie, “Blades of Glory” will get you wishing that the Winter Olympics were this year.
“Miracle”
Another hockey movie that takes on a more serious tone is “Miracle.” This film tells the true story of coach Herb Brooks who led the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team to victory against the goliath that was the Soviet team. When Herb Brooks is brought on board to coach the U.S. team, he brings a different and blunt style of coaching to a team of headstrong all-star college players. The film gives the viewers a story of victory for those who fight against the odds.
“Cloud 9”
A Disney Channel winter classic is “Cloud 9.” A romantic sports drama, starring Dove Cameron, depicts a young snowboarder who is forced to take lessons from a former champion. As the two get closer, each one inspires the other to win the upcoming “Fire and Ice Competition.” A snowboarding romance might just be the watch for you this season.
“Cool Runnings”
“Cool Runnings” is a 1993 sports comedy film by Disney, inspired by the true story of the first Jamaican Olympic bobsled team. This movie tells the inspiring story of four Jamaican bobsledders who dream of making it to the Winter Olympics even though they have never seen snow before. They get help from an ex-champion American slider to help them get that gold.
