When you hear the phrase “Finals Week” it’s likely that you will freak out. And that’s okay, because it’s normal, we all have been there. As you prepare for finals I want to share recommendations on how to manage the workload and the stress.
Some teachers will give out study guides for you to prepare for finals week, but creating your own schedule can help your mindset and help give you a better understanding of the material. The one they provide can sometimes be a bit confusing and that is okay because there are many resources.
If you do decide to make your own study schedule, start to get things organized on the day you get assigned your final exam schedule or study guide. If you start ahead of schedule, you’ll never be cramming the night before an exam. It is best to split the assignments into chunks so you can keep track of what you’ve accomplished instead of overthinking the big picture and getting overwhelmed. It is very important to take breaks in between each section because you won’t be able to memorize everything all at once. If you don’t take breaks your brain will, metaphorically, explode into a million pieces, so make sure to balance your mindset. Also make sure to reward yourself with study break times so you can recharge and feel refreshed as you begin studying again. Having a refreshed brain will make things easier than a brain not functioning.
If you see a classmate struggling in the same subject you are, be study buddies! Having a study buddy will help you both relearn the material all over again and at least you’re not struggling alone with the same assignment. A study buddy can be extremely helpful for those who struggle on certain subjects or parts of the assignment.
Having a study buddy is worth it because you’re not using ChatGPT because sometimes ChatGPT will give out false information or a different answer to the question and that is a no-no. Prioritize your study time because some exams will be more difficult, such as AP classes, while others will be easier. Some will be worth more of your grade than others, and it is okay if not everything goes to plan. You get to learn from your mistakes and that is worth something too.
It is so important to ask your teachers questions because they are there to help you. They are willing to answer any question you have so don’t be afraid.
And finally: get to bed early. When a teacher says get well-rested they actually mean it because getting a good night’s sleep will help with the stress.
Exams are important but not the end of the world. High school is a place where you get to make mistakes and grow all four years.
Just remember, make a plan, study hard, get your sleep, and stay positive because you got this.
