Senior Assassins is a longstanding tradition that is widespread across the country and is a staple of a senior’s high school experience. It’s right up there with prom, senior pranks, and Senior Spree. The classes before us have done it, our siblings did it five years ago. This year shouldn’t have been any different.
Senior Assassins is a game which involves a large group of seniors essentially hunting each other with nerf guns. The last person standing gets a cash prize. It is a tradition across the country, and in many school districts here in Washington including Snohomish, Edmonds, and Seattle.
This year’s Senior Assassins began in February, the week before midwinter break, and barely lasted a week. Many seniors were quite excited about this event. Within this week-long period many seniors were even eliminated, much to their dismay. But it soon wouldn’t matter as we all received grave news via social media: Senior Assassins had been canceled due to the administration.
The primary reason for Senior Assassins being shut down was because a handful of students were caught brandishing their respective nerf guns on campus. Of course an admin response is completely appropriate in this scenario, but they do not reserve the right to shut down an off campus event that didn’t even bear Shorewood’s name. Instead of shutting down Senior Assassins as a whole they should have punished the individuals caught with nerf guns on campus.
Despite this year’s rendition of Senior Assassins being promptly shut down by the administration, our sister school Shorecrest’s Senior Assassins lives on as well as other neighboring high schools such as Edmonds Woodway or Meadowdale.
