Podcasts. With thousands out there, you may not know where to start. So here’s a Tempest guide to what podcasts to check depending on what you like.
Sports
They shoot… and they score! For sports fans everywhere there is no shortage of podcasts centered around various kinds of sports. One of my favorites is called “New Heights” hosted by Jason Kelce, retired center for the Philadelphia Eagles, and his brother Jason Kelce, tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs. Together the brothers talk about life on and off the field. For fans of F1, “F1R THE GIRLS” is a fun podcast hosted by F1 fanatics Tiggy, Chelsea, and Sarah. It’s a great podcast for fans of F1 and it’s very beginner-friendly for those looking to get into it. Other podcasts I’d recommend are the hockey podcast “Spittin’ Chiclets” by Barstool Sports and “ESPN Daily” for all things sports.
Shows/Movies
There’s nothing better than finishing a show or movie you love and then finding out there’s more content for you to sort through. Two of my favorites are “Drama Queens” hosted by “One Tree Hill” stars Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Bethany Joy Lenz as well as “Office Ladies,” a podcast about “The Office” brought to us by actresses Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsley. If you want a podcast that focuses on the film world in a broader sense, I recommend a newer podcast, “Get Rec’d with Straw Hat Goofy.”
Life and Celebrities
When it comes to celebrities there’s just something about them that makes us want to know it all. And when it comes to life, we usually like to pretend that we do. Well, on both fronts there is a podcast to help. For celebrities, one of my favorites is Alex Cooper’s podcast “Call Her Daddy” where Cooper interviews both celebrities to learn more about their lives, and gives us some insight into her own. When talking about life, love, and everything in between another favorite is “anything goes with emma chamberlain.” Chamberlain discusses a wide range of subjects from health to dating to her life in LA on this podcast and does a great job at bringing a more intimate and comforting feel to listeners.
Politics
Though it may seem very separated from the world of high school it’s important to get young people involved in politics early on. Local station KUOW has a great podcast called “Week in Review” hosted by reporter Bill Radke. Radke covers a wide variety of issues affecting people in Washington and the local aspect of the show makes it a great starter for students. NPR’s podcast “Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me” is a fun quiz show hosted by Peter Sagal. Though it’s not all about politics, this podcast puts a fun twist on all sorts of topics like politics, music, and food. If you’re looking to get more into politics, “The Electorette” is a great podcast, especially during Women’s History Month as it discusses a lot about intersectionality and feminism.
True Crime
True crime podcasts. We listen to them to figure out the minds of some of the world’s most dangerous criminals. On Spotify, Apple Music, or wherever you get your podcasts you will find dozens of podcasts catered to this more sinister interest. One of my favorites is “Serial” which brings a more narrative element to the podcast by dedicating multiple episodes to one case. “Anatomy of a Murder” has hosts, Anna-Sigga Nicolazzi and Scott Weinberger, who used to work with law enforcement and aren’t just two people with a passion for murder. If you’re looking for something a little less real, while still covering murders “The Last Podcast on the Left” covers all the macabre elements of the world, including demons.
